It was Thursday afternoon when Paige heard a knock at her back door. She and Levi hadnât long finished their lunch. He jumped up from the game heâd been playing at her feet and ran to the door. Paige followed.
âDane!â Levi cried out in delight as he pulled on the handle.
âHey, little mate.â Dane high-fived Leviâs outstretched hand. âCan I come in?â
âOf course,â Paige said, happy for some adult conversation.
Dane held out a biscuit tin. âMumâs been baking again.â
âThatâs kind of her.â
âYay! Biscuits!â Levi jumped up and down, tugging on Daneâs arm.
âStop, Levi,â Paige said. âLet Dane get in the door and then if you ask nicely maybe you can have a biscuit.â She accepted the tin from Dane and led the way into the kitchen. âWould you like a coffee?â
âThanks.â
While the kettle boiled, Paige put the TV on for Levi and settled him in front of it with a couple of Sarahâs biscuits and a drink.
âItâs my only babysitting service,â she said guiltily.
âHey.â Dane held up his hands. His face was split in a huge grin and today his wild hair was trapped beneath a woollen beanie. âNo judgement here. Zuriâs had far more than the allowable screen time over the years. You do what you have to to survive. I was lucky to have Mum nearby.â
âHow is your mum?â Paige asked. Sheâd been concerned for Sarah ever since sheâd dropped her home but she didnât have her number, and even if she did she wouldnât have felt brave enough to call.
âSheâs the reason Iâve come, really.â
Paige set the mugs on the table with the open biscuit tin between them.
Dane wrapped his fingers around his mug and stared into it. The lead-in music for Dinosaur Train drifted from the lounge with Leviâs mumbled accompaniment.
âWeâ¦Dad and Mum and me.â Dane looked up. âWe wanted to thank you for supporting Mum the other day. And driving her home.â
âShe had a shock. I didnât think she should drive.â
âIt was kind of you.â He glanced into his cup and back at her. âEvidently I have a half-sister.â
âThat must have been a surprise.â
âFor my brother and me, yes.â
âIs your brother home?â
Dane shook his head. âMum insisted we skype with Chad so she could tell us both at the same time.â
âWhat about your dad?â
âHeâs known a long time. Mum said she couldnât marry him without telling him sheâd had a baby before. They decided theyâd tell us one dayâ¦but one day never came.â
âLife was different for an unmarried teenager in your mumâs day.â
âI get that. Iâm not judging. Itâs just that after all we went through when Zuri suddenly arrived in our livesâ¦then my dickhead brother leading a double life. Mum knows how I feel about keeping secrets.â Dane shook his head slowly back and forth. âNothing in my family is ever how it seems.â
Paige wanted to reach out and lay a hand on his but he was across the table, beyond her reach, and if she moved to him it would feel awkward.
âAre you going to meet your sister?â she asked instead.
